Warning

Protest activity may materialize in Goma over the coming hours after a fatal collision involving a military vehicle occurred in the city on Aug. 9. The collision, which took place in the vicinity of the Signers roundabout, killed at least three people and injured several others. Following the incident, a crowd reportedly gathered in the area and attempted to block traffic but dispersed after police officers fired several shots.

Authorities will probably maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area over the short term. Transport disruptions will likely affect locations subject to increased security and protest activity. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible, particularly if protesters ignore any orders from authorities to disperse.

Avoid the site of the collision and any areas subject to protest activity until the situation normalizes. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the Signers roundabout and any disruptions. Allow extra time for travel in Goma. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
