Suspected fighters from the Islamic State-aligned Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed at least five people in the village of Otomabere, North Kivu Province, late Oct. 3. The militants also set fire to a house and vehicle. A joint DRC Armed Forces (FARDC) and Uganda Peoples' Defence Force (UPDF) group reportedly responded to the attack and repelled the ADF fighters.
Despite ongoing military operations in the region, further similar attacks against civilians, rival militias, and security forces are likely across the province in the near term.
Otomabere is approximately 49 km (30 mi) northeast of Beni.

The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu. Fatal attacks and kidnappings are regularly carried out by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the east of the country. Militants typically employ significant and indiscriminate violence in such assaults.
