Europe: Activists to rally in Europe's major cities on Ukraine's Independence Day, Aug. 24

Ukrainian and pro-Ukraine activists plan to gather in Europe's major cities on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day on Aug. 24. A variety of events have been organized across Europe to celebrate Ukrainian independence, including marches, rallies, and cultural performances. Ukrainian diplomatic personnel have organized official events in most European capital cities; however, demonstrations supporting Kyiv and denouncing Russia's military operations in eastern Ukraine are also likely to occur in minor urban centers across Europe. Due to the size of the Ukrainian diaspora in Europe, major celebrations and events are likely to be attended by tens of thousands of people.

The locations below are likely to host the largest events:

• Berlin: Demonstrators will gather at March 18 Square, from 16:00

• Brussels: Participants will gather at the Cinquantenaire Park, from 12:00

• Paris: Demonstrators will gather at Breteuil Square, from 15:30

• Rome: Participants will march from Repubblica Square to the Colosseum, from 18:00

• Warsaw: Participants will gather at Castle Square from 17:30.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the events; localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely near rally sites. Violence is not anticipated; however, limited confrontations could occur between pro-Ukrainian activists, Ukrainian refugees, and pro-Russian activists.
