Italy: Unionized airport workers to strike at multiple airports nationwide, Sept. 7
Airport workers' unions plan multiple strikes at airports across Italy on Sept. 7; air travel, airport processing disruptions likely.
Labor unions representing airport workers plan to strike at multiple airports across Italy, Sept. 7. The cumulative effect of the separate labor disputes will likely prompt significant nationwide air travel disruptions. As of Aug. 28, unions plan the following strike action from 13:00-17:00:
Florence Peretola Airport (FLR): Ground handling staff
Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP): Ground services and handling staff
Pisa International Airport (PSA): Ground handling staff
Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO): ENAV air traffic control staff.
Separately, labor unions have called for work stoppages 13:00-17:00 on Wizz Air Malta (W4) and ITA Airways (AZ). Flights between 07:00-10:00 and 18:00-21:00 are guaranteed by national law.
Airport delays, and flight cancelations and disruptions are likely throughout Sept. 7. The action will likely impact services in subsequent hours as authorities address the backlog. Groups of striking workers could gather near airports throughout the day.
Confirm all flight bookings in Italy Sept. 7. Allow additional time for airport check-in and processing. Seek alternative means of transport if necessary. Do not check out of accommodation unless onward travel is assured. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. Heed instructions from authorities.
