FLASH: Magnitude-7.1 earthquake strikes off Kyushu Island, Japan, at around 16:42 Aug. 8. Significant damage possible.

A severe magnitude-7.1 earthquake occurred off the southeast coast of Kyushu Island at around 16:42 JST Aug. 8. Significant damage and casualties are possible, especially in areas of Kyushu close to the epicenter. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has advised that no tsunami threat is likely from the earthquake; however, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued tsunami advisories for coastal areas of eastern and southern Kyushu and southwestern Honshu.

This is a developing situation; additional information will be issued as warranted.

Vacate multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Move away from the immediate coastline as a precaution due to the potential for tsunamis.
