Latin America: Venezuelan activists to rally in multiple cities throughout region on Aug. 17

Supporters of the Venezuelan opposition to demonstration in multiple cities throughout Latin America, on Aug. 17.

Warning

Venezuelan activists and supporters of the Venezuelan opposition plan to hold rallies in multiple locations and countries throughout Latin America on Aug. 17, to demand the recognition of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner of the July 28 presidential elections. Electoral authorities in Venezuela proclaimed President Nicolas Maduro as the winner but have not shown details of the results; international observers have cast doubt on Maduro's victory and have said evidence shown by the opposition to claim victory appears to be legitimate.

Rallies are scheduled in dozens of major cities throughout the region, including in Venezuela. Some of the largest rallies are likely in the following locations:

  • Barcelona, Anzoategui: Plaza Bombon, 10:00

  • Barquisimeto, Lara: Avenida Venezuela and Calle 26, 10:00

  • Maracaibo, Zulia: Plaza Cacique Mara, 10:00

  • Maracay, Aragua: Plaza Bicentenaria, 10:00

Most gatherings are likely to have several hundred participants, but some demonstrations, including in major cities in Venezuela, and Buenos Aires, Bogota, Santiago, and Lima, are likely to have thousands of participants. Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the protest locations. Clashes are possible inside Venezuela, but unlikely in demonstrations in other Latin American countries.

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating near the protest sites. Consider avoiding demonstrations, particularly in Venezuela. If violence occurs, immediately depart the area.
