Security operations continue amid violent clashes, roadblocks in Culiacan, Sinaloa State, Mexico, as of late Aug. 29. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Major security operations will probably continue in the area surrounding Culiacan, Sinaloa State, as of late Aug. 29, amid roadblocks and violent clashes between security forces and criminal organizations.

Reports indicate clashes started when a group of armed civilians opened fire on security forces operating in the Jesus Maria area of northern Culiacan; the attacks were almost certainly carried out by members of the Sinaloa Cartel, a major drug-trafficking organization (DTO) based in Culiacana. Unconfirmed accounts suggest the government operation was aimed at securing the arrest of Ivan Archivaldo Guzman, leader of the Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel and one of the sons of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Local reports indicate several injuries, though officials have yet to confirm the number of casualties. Members of criminal groups burned vehicles and set up roadblocks at the entrances of Culiacan. Among the most affected areas of Culiacan have been Humaya, Puente Negro, and nearby regions, including Paredones and Limon de los Ramos. Bachigualato Federal International Airport (CUL) has experienced extensive disruptions, with delays to both departing and arriving flights, amid the security concerns.

Large scale security operations are likely to continue through at least Aug. 30, as authorities work to secure the area and clear road blockades; further armed clashes are possible. Extensive transport and business disruptions are likely throughout the city. Officials could announce restrictions on civilian movement as a precaution. School and business closures are also possible Aug. 30. Further disruptions at CUL are likely as staff work through the backlog of flights.

Monitor local news sources for up-to-date information. If violence occurs nearby, immediately take shelter in a secure, non-government building. Avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from main roads. Confirm appointments and consider rescheduling non-urgent business. Strictly heed official directives.
