Al-Qaeda-linked group The Group for Support of Islam and Muslims claims to have kidnapped two Russian nationals in Mbanga, Niger, Aug. 3.
The Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliated militant group, claims to have kidnapped two Russian nationals in a video released Aug. 3. Reports indicate that both individuals identified as Russians in the video and said they were kidnapped in Mbanga, 60km (40 miles) west of Niamey. While the video was not dated and did not include ransom demands, reports indicate both individuals were kidnapped a week ago when visiting gold mines in the Tillaberi region. Further details remain unknown at this time.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the area to rescue the abductees. Security forces may establish roadblocks, checkpoints, and search vehicles; localized curfews are also possible. Armed clashes involving kidnappers and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in and around the impacted location. If operating in the area over the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
Mbanga is located in the gold-rich Tillaberi region, at the border with Mali and Burkina Faso, where many Islamist militant groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State operate. Most kidnappings by militant groups in the region are financially and/ or ideologically motivated.
