Portugal: Unionized airport ground crew to strike at airports nationwide Aug. 31-Sept. 1

Unionized ground crew to strike at airports across Portugal Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized ground crew members employed by Menzies Aviation Portugal plan to strike at airports nationwide from 00:01 Aug. 31 until 23:59 Sept. 1. The purpose of the action is to protest low salaries and the company's use of temporary employees, among other things. The labor union organizing the action, STTAMP, expects the work stoppage to impact all airports across Portugal.

Although Menzies Aviation officials are formulating contingencies in an effort to minimize the strike's impact, unless averted, the work stoppage could prompt significant flight disruptions. Flight delays and cancellations could continue for several hours after after striking employees return to work as airlines reposition aircraft and work through their passenger backlogs.

Reconfirm travel arrangements if booked to fly via Portugal during the announced strike period. Consider alternative options for critical travel. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
