Portugal: Unionized rail workers to conduct partial nationwide strikes Aug. 29-Sept. 9

Unionized rail workers to strike intermittently in Portugal 00:01 Aug. 29-23:59 Sept. 9. Transport disruptions likely; confirm schedules.

Informational

Unionized rail workers employed by Comboios de Portugal (CP), Portugal's primary passenger train operator, plan to hold nationwide partial strikes 00:01 Aug. 29-23:59 Sept. 9. The National Independent Railway Workers Union (SINFP) has stated that all affiliated rail workers will fulfill only a part of their scheduled work days during the strike period. The strikes are being held to demand improved career advancement opportunities.

Unless averted, the strike action is likely to disrupt rail services across Portugal. Rail schedules may be amended during the affected time frame. Residual disruptions could occur in the hours between strike actions. Increased congestion is likely on other forms of transportation during the labor action. Picket protests are possible at major rail centers and in front of government buildings; heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that materialize.

Check service schedules before traveling via rail in Portugal Aug. 29-Sept. 9. Consider alternative transport options, if necessary. Follow local travel and security advice. Allow additional time for travel. Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution. Heed instructions from authorities.
