A magnitude-7.0 offshore earthquake occurred near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula at around 07:10 Aug. 18. Damage and casualties are possible in areas that experienced strong shaking. The temblor has prompted the US Tsunami Warning System to issue a tsunami threat message stating that hazardous tsunami waves are possible within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake's epicenter along the Pacific coasts of Russia.
