Uruguay: Activists to stage rally and related march in Montevideo on Aug. 14 to commemorate Student Martyrs' Day

Activists to stage rally and march in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Aug. 14 to commemorate Student Martyrs' Day; transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with several unions plan to stage a rally and an associated march in Montevideo on Aug. 14 in observance of Student Martyrs' Day. The purpose of the actions is to demand greater funding for education and commemorate students who were killed while participating in protest activity, notably including dentistry student Liber Arce in 1968. Demonstrators intend to gather at the Esplanade of the University of the Republic (Explanada de la Universidad de la Republica) and then march from 18:00 toward Plaza Primero de Mayo. March organizers did not immediately specify the route on which participants would proceed. Thousands of people will likely participate in the rally and march.

Authorities will probably deploy a heightened security presence in central Montevideo to monitor the proceedings. Transport disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of the march and any other areas subject to increased security. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the rally and march as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent affected areas and any disruptions. Allow additional time to travel in Montevideo. If clashes break out in your area, immediately leave the location and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
