Venezuela: Anti-government protests scheduled nationwide on Aug. 28

Opposition supporters to demonstration nationwide in Venezuela on Aug. 28, over the July presidential election results.

Warning

Opposition activists, supporters of presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado plan to hold protests in multiple locations throughout Venezuela on Aug. 28, one month after the presidential elections. Opposition members are demanding electoral authorities to recognize Gonzalez as the winner of the election; President Nicolas Maduro has been proclaimed as the winner of a new term, but the National Electoral Council (Consejo Nacional Electoral, CNE) has yet to provide detailed results of the vote.

Some of the largest demonstrations are likely to be in the following locations and times:

  • Caracas: Avenida Francisco de Miranda near Lido Mall, 11:00

  • Barcelona, Anzoategui: Avenida Intercomunal, near Vivero La Rosa, 11:00

  • Coro, Falcon: Paseo Manaure, 11:00

  • Cumana, Sucre: entrance to Barrio Sucre, 11:00

  • Maracaibo, Zulia: Plazoleta de la Basilica, 09:00

  • Maturin, Monagas: Avenida El Ejercito, 11:00

  • Merida, Merida: Avenida Las Americas, near McDonald's, 11:00

  • Pampatar, Nueva Esparta: Plaza Jorge Coll, 11:00

  • San Cristobal, Tachira: Plaza Tinoco along Avenida Carabobo, 11:00

  • Valencia, Carabobo: Avenida Andres Eloy Blanco, near Shopping Center, 11:00

Protests in other locations are likely. Hundreds are likely to participate in most of the protests, with thousands likely gathering in Caracas, Maracaibo, and Valencia. Heightened security near the protests is likely, as are clashes between police and demonstrators. Transport and business disruptions are likely near protest areas.

Avoid all protests as a precaution and due to the possibility of clashes. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in major cities in Venezuela on Aug. 28.
