Albania: Oppositionists to demonstrate in central Tirana Sept. 11

Activists to protest at SPAK Office in Tirana, Albania, from 12:00 Sept. 11; heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition activists plan to protest at the offices of the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) on Rruga Jordan Misja in Tirana from 12:00 Sept. 11. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the prosecution of opposition leader Sali Berisha; the gathering coincides with a visit by Berisha to the SPAK offices to receive formal charges. Several hundred people will likely attend the protest. Clashes between activists and police have occurred at previous related gatherings.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to the protest site as a precaution. Transport disruptions are likely, especially if police close local roads. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the SPAK offices, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any areas experiencing disruptions. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
