Australia: Activists to stage demonstrations in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney Sept. 17-18
Activists to protest in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, Australia Sept. 17-18. Increased security, disruptions likely.
Activists plan to stage demonstrations in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, Sept. 17-18, in solidarity with the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) after the union was placed into administration. Organizers have confirmed the following protest plans:
Brisbane: Emma Miller Place 11:00 Sept. 17
Melbourne: Victorian Trades Hall, 11:00 Sept. 18
Sydney: Belmore Park, 11:00 Sept. 18
Previous related demonstrations drew thousands of participants.
A heightened security presence is likely around the protest sites. Officials will probably enforce road closures near large gatherings, especially if activists occupy or march along nearby roads. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Scuffles between protesters and police could occur, especially if the latter attempt to disperse crowds.
Avoid the protest sites as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions and allow additional time for travel to nearby destinations. Heed all local security and traffic advisories. Leave the area at the first sign of scuffles.
