Bangladesh: Service disruptions likely at Teknaf Land Port in Cox's Bazar into late September

Service disruptions likely at Teknaf Land Port in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, into late September amid clashes in neighboring Rakhine, Myanmar.

Warning

Recurring service disruptions are likely at Teknaf Land Port in Cox's Bazar into late September amid clashes in neighboring Myanmar. Since Sept. 11, intermittent clashes and gunfire incidents have erupted between the Arakan Army resistance forces and junta personnel seeking control of Laldiya Char in Rakhine State, Myanmar, near the Naf River and the land port in Bangladesh. On Sept. 18, gunfire from the ongoing conflict struck the port and adjacent residences, prompting authorities to suspend operations at the affected facility. It remained immediately unclear when services would normalize.

The ongoing port suspensions are likely to cause related disruptions, such as cargo backlogs, vessel rerouting, and interruptions to commercial operations. Authorities are likely to maintain an increased security presence near the affected area. Further isolated security incidents cannot be ruled out.

Exercise increased caution near the affected region. Depart the area the first sign of any security disturbance. Confirm all delivery and shipping schedules. Plan accordingly for maritime freight delivery delays. Seek alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive consignments if necessary.

The ongoing conflict in Myanmar, particularly since the military coup in Feb. 2021, has led to widespread violence and instability, especially in Rakhine State. This turmoil has resulted in a significant influx of refugees into Bangladesh and increased security concerns along the border. While the recent port suspension reflects the ongoing risks in the region, it is not necessarily indicative of escalating tensions, as the situation has remained volatile for an extended period.
