Warning

Firefighters are responding to a fire at the Port of Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, late Sept. 23. The blaze reportedly ignited in a container holding lithium batteries during the afternoon hours and has emitted a large plume of smoke, prompting authorities to issue shelter-in-place instructions for residents in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. The shelter-in-place instructions specifically apply to those in the area bounded by Avenue Haig to the north, Rue Vimont to the south, Rue Hochelaga to the west, and the Saint Lawrence River to the east. Officials have urged those within the abovementioned area to stay indoors, close doors and windows, and turn off ventilation systems. Authorities did not immediately report any casualties in connection with the fire and asserted that there was no risk of the blaze spreading.

Smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality near the Port of Montreal over the coming hours. Heightened security and disruptions to transport, business, and port operations will likely affect the area until firefighters extinguish the blaze. Authorities may close local roads and issue additional shelter-in-place orders on short notice to ensure public safety.

Avoid the scene of the fire until authorities extinguish it and vacate the vicinity. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the area and any disruptions. Consider remaining indoors to avoid smoke exposure, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
