Civil society activists to protest across Quebec, Canada, Sept. 27 to demand environmental and social reforms; transport disruptions likely.
Activists affiliated with dozens of civil society organizations plan to stage demonstrations in several locations across Quebec on Sept. 27. The purpose of the protests, organized under the banner of "For the Future of the World" ("Pour la suite du monde"), is to demand government action to address climate change and social inequalities. Demonstration organizers have announced that rally participants would gather at the following locations and times, among others:
Montreal: George-Etienne Cartier Monument, 18:00
Quebec City: Braves Park, 15:00
Baie-Comeau: Mingan Square (836 Rue de Puyjalon), 18:00
Joliette: Louis Querbes Park, 11:00
Rouyn-Noranda: Copper Anode, 12:15
Saint-Jerome: Old Saint-Jerome Station, 12:00
Shawinigan: Market Square (500 5e Rue de la Pointe), 13:00
Sherbrooke: University of Sherbrooke, 13:00
Protest organizers have also indicated that some of the demonstrations will involve marches, including in Montreal to the Bonaventure metro station and in Quebec City to the National Assembly of Quebec. Hundreds of people will likely participate in the demonstrations; thousands may join in the largest protests, including in Montreal and Quebec City. Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business will likely affect the vicinities of the protests. Authorities may close local roads on short notice to facilitate the demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out, especially at the sites of larger rallies.
Avoid the protests as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinities of the demonstrations and any related disruptions. Allow extra time for travel in locations subject to protest activity. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
