Various events, including processions, protests, and other gatherings in commemoration of the 51th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 1973, military coup are likely across Chile Sept. 10-11. Commemorative observances may cause significant transport and business disruptions, with police deploying to monitor all large gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially at demonstrations that run into the nighttime hours. While organizers have as yet released no details concerning specific gatherings, the group Memorial Route for Truth and Justice plans to stage is annual commemorative procession from the Museo de la Memoria to Plaza Brasil between 17:00-20:00 Sept. 11.

Authorities have deployed at least 2,000 law enforcement officers to prevent violence starting the night of Sept. 10. The main focus of increased security measures is 14 undisclosed areas in the Santiago Metropolitan Region that are considered critical, and where authorities believe larger disruptions can happen. Within Santiago, demonstrators are most likely to gather in Plaza Baquedano. Such demonstrations could cause significant transport disruptions on Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, a major thoroughfare through the city. Rallies are also likely at the National Stadium, the Plaza Los Heroes, and presidential palace La Moneda.

Elsewhere across the country, demonstrations are most likely in major cities such as Antofagasta, Arica, Concepcion, Iquique, Talca, Talcahuano, Temuco, Valparaiso, and Vina del Mar. Activists will probably gather in major plazas, near government buildings, and on major roads.

Avoid all large gatherings as a precaution, especially those that take place after dark. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time for travel. Reconfirm business appointments. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
