Pipe bomb attack injures eight marines, damages several buildings in Timbiqui, Cauca Department, Colombia, Sept. 10. Tight security likely.

Informational

Heightened security is likely in parts of Cauca Department over the coming days after a Sept. 10 pipe bomb attack targeting a military facility in Timbiqui left at least eight marines injures. The attack occurred near the naval base in the town's Barrio Francia area at about 13:30. Although no group has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident, authorities suspect the involvement of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC). The blast also reportedly severely damaged several nearby buildings.

Heavily armed police and military personnel will almost certainly maintain a heightened presence in the area; additional attacks cannot be ruled out. Security personnel may erect roadblocks, resulting in localized ground transport disruptions.

Avoid the scene of the incident until authorities have determined no further incidents are imminent and have given the all clear. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel.
