Ecuador: Power outages reported across several provinces Sept. 7

Power outages reported across most of Ecuador Sept. 7. Business and transport disruptions likely.

Critical

Authorities in Ecuador are reporting that a nationwide electricity outage is occurring as of early Sept. 7. The incident resulted from a transmission line fault that caused cascading blackouts starting at about 08:30. Significant disruptions have been reported in major cities, including Quito and Guayaquil, among others. Authorities estimate power will be restored within three to four hours.

Commercial disruptions are probable for the duration of the outage. Ground transport disruptions are likely in areas with malfunctioning traffic signals. Disruptions to telecommunications, including cellular and mobile services, may occur. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as automatic teller machines (ATMs) and fueling stations. Blackouts may adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Charge all communication and portable electronic devices when possible. Unplug electronic equipment that is not connected to surge protectors. Exercise caution when driving in areas affected by power outages. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are operational, including after power is restored. Ensure that generators are functional and fully fueled.
