Finland: Activists to demonstrate in Helsinki Sept. 27

Activists to hold multiple marches to Parliament in Helsinki from 16:00 Sept. 27. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Elokapina/Extinction Rebellion movement plan to protest in central Helsinki from 16:00 on Sept. 27. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand urgent action to combat climate change. Participants plan to march in multiple columns, ultimately converging on Mannerheimintie and blocking the street. Demonstrations are set to begin on Mannerheimintie at 16:00. The primary column plans to gather with a rally at Senate Square 16:00-17:15 before marching to Parliament and blocking Mannerheimintie at 18:00; it was not immediately clear where other marches were planned to start. As of the afternoon of Sept. 26, police noted that protest organizers had not registered their demonstration and that police might, therefore, attempt to intervene and disperse protesters. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend; however, authorities warned that significant transport disruptions were likely.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely throughout central Helsinki. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out; this is particularly possible if law enforcement officers attempt to disperse or arrest protesters.

Avoid all protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Helsinki from early afternoon through late evening Sept. 27. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
