Germany: Climate activists plan protest campaign in Kassel from Sept. 25
Climate activists plan protest campaign regarding Kassel-Calden Airport in Kassel, Germany, from Sept. 25; airport disruptions possible.
The climate group Last Generation (LG) plans a campaign of protests in Kassel, from Sept. 25. Activists will denounce the government investments in Kassel-Calden Airport (KSF). LG leaders announced a "wave of protests" starting Sept. 25, that will "last for several days". The events will include a "Disobedient Assembly" on Sept. 28, and further protests on Oct. 5 and Oct. 12. As of Sept. 23, the group has not announced further details, including other potential protest venues. Several hundred protestors may attend the larger events. On Sept. 21, a small group of activists sprayed paint on KSF airport buildings and glued themselves to the pavement near the entrance.
Authorities will likely deploy additional security to KSF airport and other potential protest sites. Protests and heightened security will likely prompt disruptions at the airport and its approaches. LG may also disrupt road traffic in the city center. Violence is unlikely although scuffles between protestors and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protests as a routine security precaution. Follow local traffic and security advice. Allow extra time for travel across the impacted areas and seek alternative routes as necessary. In the event of violent clashes, leave the area immediately. Confirm flights if booked to travel via KSF from Sept. 25. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Arrive early at the airport to allow additional time for processing.
