Germany: LGBTQ activists to demonstrate in Dortmund on Sept. 14. Counter-protest also planned

LGBTQ activists to march in central Dortmund, Germany, Sept. 14; counter-demonstration also planned. Tight security and disruptions likely.

Warning

LGBTQ activists and supporters plan to demonstrate in Dortmund on Sept. 14. LGBTQ activists will gather for Dortmund's Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade. In response to the parade, right-wing counter-demonstrators are organizing their own protest, prompting CSD supporters to arrange a separate demonstration in solidarity. The planned events include:

  • CSD Proceedings: Participants will assemble at the northeast exit of Dortmund Central Station at 12:00 before marching to Friedensplatz, where they will hold a festival from 15:00.

  • Right-wing counter-protest: The location and time are unclear, but participants may demonstrate at the Dortmund U-Tower starting at 12:30.

  • CSD Solidarity Protest: Participants will gather at Katharinentreppe from 11:15.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near all protest sites. Confrontations between CBD protesters and supporters, counter-demonstrators, and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any demonstration sites or between Dortmund Central Station and Friedensplatz during the parade. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
