Ghana: Additional unions join nationwide university workers' strike as of Sept. 20 /update 1

Additional unions join university workers' strike in Ghana as of Sept. 20; possible protests, disruptions to hospital, university services.

Informational

University teachers and staff are continuing an indefinite nationwide strike on Sept. 20. Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) members began striking on Sept. 16; they were joined on Sept. 20 by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG). Union leaders are demanding the government address issues such as vehicle maintenance and pension allowances. The strike will likely continue until officials meet select demands.

Disruptions to tertiary education and university hospitals' services are likely. Related protests are possible near public universities and government buildings, particularly in urban centers such as Accra or Kumasi. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near any protests that materialize. Should students support the educational staff, the scale of the demonstrations and associated risk of clashes with security forces will likely increase.

Avoid all protests and anticipate localized transport disruptions near possible demonstration sites. Abide by all official directives. Confirm hospital appointements.
