Ghana: Nationwide strike and demonstrations over mining environmental issues on Sept. 30
Unions and civil society groups threaten to strike and protest across Ghana over mining environmental issues on Sept. 30.
Multiple unions and civil society groups have called for a nationwide lockdown and demonstrations on Sept. 30. The action is to denounce illegal mining known as "Galamsey" and demand the government cancel all mining licenses and implement a state of emergency in mining areas, among other demands, due to the mining industry's impact on the environment.
Should the strike go ahead, disruptions to various public and private sectors are possible. Likely protest locations include sites of mining companies or government buildings such as the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in Accra. Officials will likely deploy to any protest location. Clashes are possible. During a protest over economic hardship and mining issues on Sept. 21, the police arrested over 40 people in Accra for engaging in acts of vandalism and obstructing road traffic.
Reconfirm business appointments if the strike proceeds on Sept. 30. Allow extra time for travel. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize; if crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately. Heed instructions from security services.
