Ghana: Picket protest at Revolution Square in Accra, Sept. 21-23

Activists affiliated with the anti-government FixTheCountry movement to protest at Revolution Square in Accra, Ghana, Sept. 21-23.

Warning

The anti-government #FixTheCountry movement has called for a picket protest at Revolution Square in front of Jubilee House (Presidential Palace) along Liberation Road in Accra from 06:00 Sept. 21 through 23:59 Sept. 23. The purpose of the action is to denounce alleged bad governance, corruption, and economic difficulties facing Ghanians, among other issues. It is unclear whether authorities have sanctioned the protest. The event may draw hundreds of participants. A similar gathering held in 2023 saw a police crackdown and the arrest of dozens of protestors. The public holiday Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day falls on Sept. 21.

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near Revolution Square until the action concludes. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out given the anti-government nature of the demonstration.

Avoid the protest site. Plan for localized disruptions near Revolution Square and along Liberation Road. Heed the advice of security personnel and leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation.
