Ghana: Political activists to protest nationwide on Sept. 17; counter-demonstration in Accra /update 1

Activists will march to all regional Electoral Commission (EC) offices across Ghana on Sept. 17. Counter-demonstration in Accra.

Warning

Political activists affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) plan to protest nationwide on Sept. 17 in response to perceived voter registration irregularities. Protest organizers announced that participants would march to the Electoral Commission (EC) regional offices, and NDC leadership will present a petition at the EC headquarters in Accra. It is unclear how many people will participate in the marches.

In response, two civil society groups have planned a counter-demonstration in Accra. Participants plan to gather at the Afua (Efua) Sutherland Park from 09:00 and march towards the EC headquarters.

Increased security measures like security cordons and roadblocks are likely near EC offices nationwide, particularly in Accra. Traffic disruptions will likely occur near EC offices and along march routes on Sept. 17. Clashes may occur between police and protesters and between rival activists.

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution and seek alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Heed all instructions from local authorities and leave the area at the first sign of a security disturbance.
