Iran: Increased security likely after separatists kill three police officers in Mirjaveh, Sistan va Baluchestan Province, Sept. 12
Heightened security likely after Baloch separatists kill three police officers in Mirjaveh, Sistan va Baluchestan Province, Iran, Sept. 12.
Heightened security is likely in Sistan va Baluchestan Province's Mirjaveh area following an attack by the Jaish ul-Adl separatist group that killed three police officers and wounded one civilian on Sept. 12. Jaish ul-Adl has claimed several attacks this year, including two assaults in April that killed 10 members of the security forces.
Increased security measures will almost certainly result in localized transport and business disruptions. Authorities may implement checkpoints and other security measures in an attempt to locate the perpetrators of the attack.
If operating in Mirjaveh, avoid the scene of the incident until authorities give the all-clear. Exercise situational awareness if operating near the Iranian-Pakistani border. Avoid all areas where security forces have deployed. Plan for localized ground transport disruptions.
Sistan va Baluchestan is one of Iran's most restive provinces. The province is also Iran's poorest region whose residents, who are Sunni and Balochi, allege that authorities have regularly engaged in systematic discrimination, police repression, and forced resettlement.
Multiple resistance and separatist groups operate in the region, including Jundallah, Harakat Ansar Iran, Jaish ul-Adl, and Ansar Al-Furqan. These groups have occasionally launched attacks against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) bases and checkpoints.
