Italy: Unionized air travel personnel to strike nationwide Sept. 24 /update 1

Unionized flight and ground staff plan to stage work stoppage at airports across Italy 00:01-23:59 Sept. 24; air travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Thousands of unionized flight and ground staff affiliated with several airlines and airports plan to strike across Italy on Sept. 24 to demand better working conditions, among other contractual improvements. Affected carriers include Air Dolomiti (EN), EasyJet (U2), Wizz Air (W6), and ITA Airways (AZ); all of these carriers will experience 24-hour strikes except for EasyJet, which is set for a 13:00-17:00 work stoppage. Additionally, baggage and ground operations personnel plan to strike at various airports across the country for the entire day. Ground handling personnel at Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ), however, will only cease work 12:00-16:00. In addition to BLQ, airports that are slated to experience labor actions include the following:

  • Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)

  • Milan Linate Airport (LIN)

  • Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

  • Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE)

Walkout-related flight delays and cancellations will probably affect airports across the country on Sept. 24. Delays during check-in and security clearance operations are likely. Authorities will likely deploy an increased security presence to the sites of any related protests that materialize.

Reconfirm all flight reservations if traveling Sept. 24, particularly if scheduled to travel on a flight operated by Air Dolomiti, EasyJet, Wizz Air, or ITA Airways. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider arriving at the airport early to offset any check-in and security clearance delays.
