Lebanon, Israel: Lebanese Hizballah carries out retaliatory strikes against Israel Sept. 18 following pager attack /update 1

Lebanese Hizballah carries out retaliatory strikes against Israel Sept. 18 following pager attack. Increased security likely.

Warning

The Lebanese Hizballah (LH) carried out retaliatory strikes targeting Tiberias, Israel, Sept. 18, in response to Israel's attack on wireless communication devices belonging to LH members. Israeli authorities announced that they intercepted at least two projectiles. There have been no immediate reports of injuries.

Further crossborder attacks are likely between Israel and Lebanon in the near term. Such crossborder clashes have previously caused transport and business disruptions in Israel, including the temporary closure of the Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV).

In light of recent regional tensions, consider avoiding nonessential travel to Lebanon and Israel, particularly the shared border region, until the situation stabilizes. Consider departing Lebanon via commercial means while these are available. Note that commercial options in Lebanon may become increasingly limited if the security environment deteriorates. Monitor local media and abide by security forces' directives. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors and away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Reconfirm the status of transport services before departure. Review and update contingency plans.

A series of explosions targeting wireless communication devices occurred across Lebanon Sept. 17, including in the LH stronghold of Dahieh, areas near the border with Israel, and Beqaa Governorate. Initial reports claim that Israeli authorities hacked into LH's communication network to detonate the devices. The attack killed at least nine people and wounded approximately 3,000 others. Among those killed is the son of an LH member of Parliament. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health, around 170 people are in critical condition.
