Heightened security, demonstrations, transport disruptions likely in parts of Mexico on Oct. 1 due to presidential inauguration.

Warning

Increased security, demonstrations, and localized business and transport disruptions are likely in parts of Mexico on Oct. 1 as the nation inaugurates Claudia Sheinbaum as its new president. The inauguration ceremony will take place at the San Lazaro Legislative Palace in Mexico City starting at 09:00. Various foreign dignitaries will attend the event. Many banking institutions will remain closed for the inauguration, as will most government offices. In advance of the event, military and National Guard forces have deployed and sealed off the Legislative Palace to ensure security for the inauguration; authorities have also set up barricades and closed nearby streets.

Several labor groups, particularly those representing workers in the education sector, have planned demonstrations to coincide with the inauguration. Unionized teachers affiliated with the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE) will stage a protest march in Mexico City on inauguration day. Participants will gather near the San Cosme metro station starting at 10:00 before marching to the Benito Juarez Hemicycle. In Oaxaca, CNTE members will assemble at that city's Benito Juarez Monument at 09:00 before marching to the Zocalo. In Zacatecas, activists from the Democratic Movement of Zacatecas Teacher's Union (Movimiento Democrático del Magisterio Zacatecano, MDMZ) will gather at Calle Maquina 3030 at 11:00 before marching to Plaza de Armas.

Additional demonstrations are possible in other locations across Mexico on Oct. 1. Security forces will likely maintain a heightened posture in area where protests are possible. Security measures, including road closures, could prompt localized business and transport disruptions. Clashes between protesters and the police, or among activists from opposing political camps cannot be ruled out.

As a precaution and to minimize travel delays, avoid the vicinity of the inauguration venue. Avoid all demonstrations that may materialize. Allow additional time for travel in Mexico City and other major cities on Oct. 1. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
