Pakistan: Unionized local government workers across Sindh Province plan to hold protest march toward Karachi through Sept. 26

Unionized workers plan to hold protest march across Sindh Province, Pakistan, through Sept. 26. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Unionized local government employees are holding a protest march across Sindh Province through Sept. 26 over various demands relating to compensation, promotions, and other benefits. The caravan, which started at the Bhutto Family Mausoleum in Larkana District Sept. 19, will pass through various districts of Sindh Province, with public rallies at various stops. The action will conclude at the final rally point of Karachi Press Club Sept. 26. Announced stops are mainly along National Highway 5; these include:

  • Sept. 22: Nawabshah City of Shaheed Benazirabad District

  • Sept. 23: Bhit Shah town of Matiari District

  • Sept. 24: Hyderabad City

  • Sept. 25: Thatta City

Potential gathering sites include government buildings, press clubs, public squares, and major intersections. A few hundred people may participate in each demonstration; the largest event will likely be in Karachi.

Heightened security measures are probable at rally sites and along the march route. Increased security deployment, security cordons, personnel and vehicle checks, as well as roadblocks preventing entry to Karachi are likely. Authorities may conduct preventive arrests or disperse large gatherings, potentially resulting in retaliatory protests. Localized business disruptions could occur in case of violence. Participants may clash with security officers and/or engage in arson and vandalism to protest any police action.

Avoid rallies due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations. Monitor trusted local media for updates on rally sites and march routes, as organizers may not announce them in advance. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
