Peru: Bus accident injures several tourists at Machu Picchu Sept. 16, lingering disruptions likely
Lingering disruptions likely following bus accident that injured several tourists at Machu Picchu, Cusco Department, Peru, Sept. 16.
As of Sept. 16, lingering transport disruptions are likely after a tourist bus fell off of one of the switchbacks on the Hiram Bingham Highway, which connects the Machu Picchu ruins to Machupicchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), the town below them. The accident occurred as the bus was traveling from the ruins through thick fog; authorities said that more than 20 tourists, including foreign nationals, were injured. Though authorities did not immediately release the nationalities of those injured, the Mexican government confirmed that its citizens were among those affected by the accident. The Hiram Bingham Highway is the only road from the ruins; the only other means of transport between the ruins and the town is hiking.
