Emergency crews responding to wildfires in Aveiro District, Portugal, as of Sept. 16. Evacuations and road clsoures ongoing.

Warning

Emergency crews are responding to several wildfires burning in Aveiro District as of Sept. 16. Authorities have reported at least 36 active fires across the district amid hot, windy, and dry conditions Sept. 16, of which ten are considered complex and serious. The fire of greatest concern is burning in Albergaria-a-Velha Municipality, where the fire is reportedly burning homes in the area. Some residents have been evacuated and are sheltering at a local cinema. The fire broke out in neighboring Sever do Vouga Sept. 15 and around 168 firefighters are on site tackling the blaze.

More than 500 firefighters are tackling another large blaze in Oliveira de Azemeis municipality. At least one firefighter has died, and several others were injured during firefighting operations. Many roads across the district have been closed due to the wildfires, including sections of the A1, A17, A25, A29, and A32 highways. Rail services have been suspended on the Northern Line at Cacia. Smoke has reduced air quality in parts of the region, including Averio City, where an industrial estate has been evacuated.

Emergency responders may close roads and evacuate additional communities in affected areas at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
