Sri Lanka: Officials lift nationwide curfew as of Sept. 23 as Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared winner of presidential elections /update 1
Curfew ends across Sri Lanka as of Sept. 23 amid presidential election conclusion. Tight security likely; rallies, disruptions possible.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party has assumed duties as the ninth President of Sri Lanka Sept. 23. Authorities earlier lifted a nationwide curfew effective from 12:01 Sept. 22; the measures were in place amid vote counting for the Sept. 21 presidential elections. Heightened security and traffic curbs will likely continue near key government buildings in Colombo to facilitate meetings to select the new cabinet.
Victory rallies by the JVP and its allies are possible in the coming days, mainly in Colombo and other cities. Groups such as labor unions may also demonstrate over demands to the new government. Potential gathering locations include public squares, government offices, railway stations, and major intersections. Localized traffic disruptions will probably occur near rally sites; police typically use force to disperse large and/or unauthorized gatherings. Strikes - especially those affecting public education and railway services - are possible. However, significant violence or disruptions are unlikely.
Prepare for increased security measures such as roadblocks and identification checks in Sri Lanka through at least Sept. 23; allow additional time to reach destinations, especially in provincial capitals Avoid political party offices, political rallies, and government buildings due to the potential for protests, clashes or attacks. If a large or unruly crowd materializes nearby, immediately leave the area or seek shelter indoors. Carry valid identification at all times to present at checkpoints. Monitor local media for rally updates as organizers may not publicize details in advance. Heed all official instructions, including travel, security, and traffic advisories.
