Uruguay: Activists to march in support of LGBTQ rights in central Montevideo starting at 18:30 Sept. 27

LGBTQ activists and supporters to march in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 18:30 Sept. 27. Increased security and transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activist groups plan to march in central Montevideo during the evening of Sept. 27. Dubbed the "March for Diversity," the purpose of the event is to demand equal rights for the LGBTQ community. Participants will gather at Plaza de Cagancha starting at 18:30 before marching along Avenida Libertador to Plaza Primero de Mayo. The event could draw a large crowd of participants.

Although the march will likely remain peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence in the city as a precaution and to facilitate the demonstration. Counterdemonstrations and skirmishes between demonstrators and police, or among activists from opposing camps, while unlikely, cannot be ruled out. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable.

Avoid the march as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the demonstration and any associated disruptions if operating in downtown Montevideo on Sept. 27. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the scheduled festivities. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
