Police confirmed one person was killed and a suspect detained following a shooting at the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg, Kentucky, on the afternoon of Sept. 19. Unconfirmed reports indicate the county's Sheriff was the person detained in connection with the shooting and that a district judge was a victim of the shooting.

Schools in the area were temporarily placed under lockdown; however, the lockdown has been lifted, and students have been released. Disruptions and increased security are likely to continue near the Letcher County Courthouse as police investigate.
