Albania: Political activists clash with authorities in central Tirana Oct. 7

Demonstrators clash with police near City Hall in Tirana, Albania, evening Oct 7. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Demonstrators clashed with law enforcement officers near Tirana City Hall on the evening of Oct. 7. Demonstrators reportedly threw objects, including Molotov cocktails, at police, injuring at least ten officers and causing fires in the area. Police then used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Activists had initially gathered near the Albanian Parliament in Tirana at 18:00 to denounce a prison sentence given to the Democratic Party deputy, Ervin Salianji.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near Tirana City Hall through the late hours and into early Oct. 8. Renewed clashes between police and demonstrators are possible and cannot be ruled out at other demonstration sites.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Tirana, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinity of the demonstration and any related disruptions. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
