Australia: King Charles III to visit Canberra and Sydney Oct. 18-23
Security, traffic curbs certain in Canberra and Sydney, Australia, for royal visit Oct. 18-23. Protests planned.
Heightened security and traffic curbs are certain in Canberra and Sydney during a visit by King Charles III Oct. 18-23; locations especially affected will be event venues, Sydney International Airport (SYD), and hotels and routes used by the delegation. Official events are as follows:
Oct. 18: King Charles III and Queen Camilla will arrive in the evening in SYD
Oct. 19: Rest day
Oct. 20: The monarch will join a community barbecue event in Parramatta, Western Sydney.
Oct. 21: King Charles III will visit the Australian War Memorial in Canberra for a public event from 12:35 and proceed to a ceremonial welcome at the Parliament House. Anti-monarchy protesters plan to gather near the parliament building 11:30-14:30.
Oct. 22: King Charles III will attend a public event at the Sydney Opera House forecourt around 16:00 before meeting supporters at the Man O'War Steps. His Majesty will then review navy ships at the Sydney Harbor and view a fly-past. Anti-monarchy groups plan to rally from 12:00 near the Sydney Opera House.
Oct. 23: The King and his entourage will leave for Samoa from SYD.
Traffic restrictions, including diversions and road closures, are certain near event venues, especially in Canberra and Sydney. Crowds could line streets near event venues, though significant disruptions are unlikely. Increased traffic congestion is possible near event venues as attendees arrive and depart. Closures of educational institutions and businesses along key routes leading to main meeting sites may occur. Increased security measures are likely at SYD and all checkpoints nationwide, which could cause congestion and delays in clearing customs and security screenings.
Anti-monarchy protests will likely pass off peacefully, with several dozen people likely to attend each gathering. Counter-rallies are possible. Minor scuffles are possible, especially if rival groups clash or police attempt to forcibly disperse any activists who breach security cordons.
Opportunistic crime, such as pickpocketing, remains possible at crowded gatherings. Authorities have not publicized any specific threats to the events; however, an extant risk of terrorism exists nationwide. Measures such as vehicular and pedestrian checks are probable at sensitive sites like major roadways, government buildings, security installations, and crowded public places in Canberra and Sydney, Oct. 18-23.
Avoid the aforementioned venues as a precaution if not attending related events. Remain aware of your surroundings and secure valuables. Allow additional time for transport, including to and from SYD Oct. 18 and 23. Confirm business appointments and transport reservations if operating near event venues. Present proper identification documents and remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks. Heed all official instructions including transport and security advisories.
