Australia: Unionized Qantas Airways engineers striking at airports nationwide Oct. 23
Unionized Qantas engineers striking at airports across Australia Oct. 23. Flight disruptions possible.
Unionized engineers employed by Qantas Airways (QF) launched a nationwide 24-hour wildcat strike Oct. 23. The purpose of the labor action is to demand increased salaries. Participating workers commenced protests at Brisbane (BNE) and Melbourne (MLE) airports at 09:00; it remains unclear how many participants the demonstrations have drawn or how long they will last. Qantas Airways official assert that the work stoppage would not lead to flight disruptions.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites at BNE and MLE. Flight disruptions, including cancellations, remain possible on Qantas Airways flights. Additional picket protests are possible at other airports served by Qantas Airways.
Reconfirm flight reservations if booked to travel on Qantas Airways during the strike period. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution.
