Canada: Unionized dockworkers striking at Port of Montreal, Quebec, through at least early Oct. 3 /update 1

Unionized dockworkers striking at Port of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, through at least early Oct. 3. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Dockworkers affiliated with the Canadian Union of Public Employees will continue their ongoing strike at the Port of Montreal through at least early Oct. 3. The purpose of the action is to press for increased salaries and changes in the work schedule, among other demands. The work stoppage began at 07:00 Sept. 30 and is currently slated to last 72 hours.

The action is affecting two of the facility's four container terminals - specifically the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which account for around 40 percent of the freight processed at the Port of Montreal. Significant disruptions to maritime freight shipping are likely for the duration of the strike and could extend for several days after longshoremen return to work as shipping companies process their backlogs.

Striking workers could stage demonstrations near the port during the walkout. Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence monitor any such gatherings. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible; low-level skirmishes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm maritime shipments for the announced strike period. Consider rescheduling or rerouting time-sensitive freights. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
