Police investigating fatal knife attack in Shanghai, China, as of Oct. 1. Multiple casualties reported; personal motive confirmed.

Warning

Police are investigating a stabbing attack in a supermarket along Song Hui Middle Road in Songjiang District, Shanghai, as of Oct. 1. Authorities have detained a male assailant responsible for a knife attack around 21:47 Sept. 30 that killed three people and injured 15 more. Officials stated that the attacker was motivated by personal grievances.

Avoid the incident site until authorities conclude their investigative work at the scene and vacate the vicinity. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.

Multiple knife attacks have occurred in recent months across China, and has affected both locals and foreigners. On Sept. 18, a Japanese student was stabbed in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, though Chinese authorities did not confirm any nationality-based targeting. In June, the Japanese Embassy in China issued an advisory for its citizens following an attack on a bus used by a Japanese school in Suzhou; a male perpetrator injured a Japanese woman and her child while seriously wounding a Chinese woman who tried to intervene. Although the overall crime threat in Shanghai remains low and violent crime is uncommon, isolated criminal incidents affecting foreigners cannot be ruled out.
