Ethiopia: Large gatherings, increased security likely in Addis Ababa and Oromia regions during Irreecha Festival Oct. 5-6

Increased security, large gatherings likely in Addis Ababa and Oromia, Ethiopia, during Oct. 5-6 Irreecha Festival. Clashes possible.

Warning

Increased security and large public gatherings are likely in the Addis Ababa and Oromia regions during the annual Irreecha Festival, Oct. 5-6. While observances will take place in major cities in Oromia, the main celebrations will occur in Addis Ababa on Oct. 5 and at Lake Hora in Bishoftu, located about 63 km (39 miles) southeast of the capital on Oct. 6. Security forces have announced closing streets near festival-related events, including along key routes in the capital, such as the route from St. Urael Square to Meskel Square.

Although Irreecha is traditionally a holiday of thanksgiving, some groups have in recent years used it as an opportunity to protest the federal government's policies; therefore, demonstrations and associated clashes cannot be ruled out. Authorities will likely deploy an increased police presence as a precaution. Given the ban on protests currently in force in Ethiopia, police will likely move swiftly and decisively to break up any demonstrations that occur. Traffic and transportation disruptions are likely around festival venues, particularly in Addis Ababa.

Allow additional travel time near festival venues. Plan accordingly for traffic and transportation disruptions. Seek updated information on security and route conditions before traveling in affected areas. Heed the instructions of local security personnel. As a precaution, avoid large gatherings. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure building.
