Germany: Climate activists plan protests in Kassel Oct. 2 and 5 /update 1

Climate activists plan protests in central Kassel, Germany, Oct. 2 and 5; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

The climate group Last Generation (LG) is planning two demonstrations in central Kassel, as part of a protest campaign on Oct. 2 and Oct. 5. Activists aim to denounce the government investments in Kassel-Calden Airport (KSF). Demonstrators will reportedly gather according to the following schedule:

  • Oct. 2: Lutherplatz, from 12:00;

  • Oct. 5: Harbor Bridge, from 12:00.

Demonstrations also occurred on Sept. 21, Sept. 25, and Sept. 28. On Sept. 21, a small group of activists sprayed paint on KSF buildings and glued themselves to the pavement near the entrance.

Authorities will likely deploy additional security near the protest sites. Disruptions to road traffic and transport are likely in Kassel's city center on Oct. 2 and on Harbor Bridge on Oct. 5. Violence is unlikely, although scuffles between protestors and police cannot be ruled out. Occasional confrontations between protesters and disgruntled drivers might also occur.

Avoid the protests as a routine security precaution. Follow local traffic and security advice. Allow extra time for travel across the impacted areas and seek alternative routes as necessary. In the event of violent clashes, leave the area immediately.
