Germany: WWII ordnance to prompt widespread evacuations in Cologne, through Oct. 11

Authorities to dispose of WWII bomb at Merheim, Cologne, Germany, through Oct. 11. Evacuations ongoing, road closures planned.

Warning

Authorities plan to dispose of a WWII bomb near Merheim Hospital, Cologne, on Oct. 11. The ordnance was discovered earlier in the day during construction work. Authorities have established a 500-meter (546-yard) evacuation zone around the operation site. Evacuation operations started as of the morning of Oct. 9; up to 10,000 residents will be evacuated by Oct. 11, as well as three medical facilities (Merheim Hospital, LVR Clinic, and RehaNova Clinic). Authorities will also issue road closures around the affected area.

Significant road travel and transport disruptions are likely throughout the operation and will likely linger for several hours after authorities give the all-clear. Heightened security is likely in the operation area.

Consider taking alternate routes to reduce travel delays if traveling through Merheim-Cologne. Allow additional time for travel near the operation site and via affected roadways. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities.
