Guatemala: Activists plan to march in Guatemala City Oct. 20

Activists to stage Revolution Day march in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from 08:00 Oct. 20; heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists affiliated with various organizations, including the Guatemalan Autonomous Popular and Trade Union Movement (Movimiento Sindical y Popular Autonomo Guatemalteco), are planning to stage a march in Guatemala City from 08:00 Oct. 20 to commemorate Revolution Day. Demonstration participants are reportedly planning to gather at El Trebol in Zone 11 before marching toward Plaza de la Constitucion, also known as Parque Central, in Zone 1 via Avenida Bolivar and Paseo de La Sexta. The number of people who would participate in the demonstration was not immediately clear.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence along the march route to monitor the demonstration. Transport disruptions will likely affect parts of Guatemala City during the march; road closures and business disruptions are also possible. While significant violence is unlikely, skirmishes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the march as a precaution. Allow extra time to travel in Guatemala City and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent affected areas and any disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
