Italy: Lingering heightened security likely in parts of Naples after protesters denouncing local G7 meeting clash with police Oct. 19

Protesters denouncing G7 meeting clash with police in Naples, Italy, Oct. 19; lingering heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in parts of Naples over the coming hours after pro-Palestinian protesters - denouncing a meeting of G7 defense ministers at the city's Palazzo Reale - clashed with police officers in the city on Oct. 19. Participating activists reportedly gathered at Piazza Garibaldi before clashing with police in the vicinity of Piazza Carita; some activists hurled stones and other objects at law enforcement personnel, who responded by firing tear gas to disperse the protesters. The situation has since normalized, and no injuries were immediately reported.

Road closures and consequent transport disruptions will likely affect areas subject to lingering increased security measures, including the vicinity of Palazzo Reale. Localized business disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinity of Palazzo Reale. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
