Activists to stage rallies in Latin America and Caribbean in early October amid anniversary of Israel-Hamas conflict. Tight security likely.

Warning

Pro-Palestinian activists plan to stage rallies in major cities across Latin America and the Caribbean in early October amid the anniversary of the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Protests related to the Israel-Hizballah conflict are also likely. Most demonstrations that materialize will probably draw several hundred attendees, but participation in the thousands is possible in some major cities.

Organizers have confirmed plans for protests in numerous cities, including:

  • Quito, Ecuador: March from Plaza de Santo Domingo to Casa de la Cultura, 10:00 Oct. 5

  • Santiago, Chile: Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM), 11:00 Oct. 5

  • Mexico City, Mexico: March from Angel de la Independencia to Monumento de la Revolucion, 15:00 Oct. 5

  • Bogota, Colombia: March from Universidad Pedagogica to the Embassies of Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, and the US, starting at 15:00 Oct. 7

  • Lima, Peru: March from Parque Washington to Embassy of Israel, 16:00 Oct. 7

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina: Plaza de Mayo, 17:00 Oct. 7

  • San Jose, Costa Rica: Outside Legislative Assembly, 17:00 Oct. 7

  • Belo Horizonte, Brazil: Praca Sete de Setembro, 17:00 Oct. 7

  • Guadalajara, Mexico: March from Andador Escorza to Plaza de Armas, 18:00 Oct. 7

  • San Juan, Puerto Rico: Outside the Consulate of Israel, 16:00 Oct. 8

  • Sao Paulo, Brazil: Outside the Museum of Art of Sao Paulo (MASP), 18:30 Oct. 8

Related gatherings are likely in locations elsewhere throughout the region, especially in major urban centers. Most such demonstrations will likely occur in prominent public squares, near government offices, and near Israeli diplomatic offices. Protests may also target major roads and highways. Counterprotests could occur in some locations.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence near any sizable demonstrations. While most events will probably remain largely peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and police, as well as among activists from opposing camps, cannot be ruled out. Localized security-related transport and business disruptions are possible.

Exercise caution near any rallies that materialize. Heed instructions from authorities. Plan accordingly for localized road travel delays. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
