Lebanon: Officials report at least 18 killed, several wounded in Israeli airstrike on central Beirut as of late Oct. 10 /update 1
Authorities report at least 18 killed, 92 injured in Israeli airstrike in central Beirut, Lebanon, late Oct. 10. Emergency response ongoing.
As of late Oct. 10, officials reported that at least 18 people have been killed and 92 others injured in central Lebanon after Israeli airstrikes targeted residential buildings in the Nuwairi and Ras Al Naba’a areas of the city. Reports indicate that the strikes targeted a senior Lebanese Hizballah (LH) official and caused buildings to collapse. The emergency response is ongoing and will likely continue through early Oct. 11. Officials will almost certainly update casualty figures in the coming hours.
Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business will probably affect the area over the coming hours. Authorities may close local roads or evacuate nearby buildings on short notice to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety. Further attacks are likely over the coming days.
Avoid the impacted areas until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the affected areas and allow additional travel time to nearby destinations. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials and your home government. In light of recent regional tensions, consider avoiding nonessential travel to Lebanon, particularly the border region shared with Israel until the situation stabilizes. Consider departing Lebanon via commercial means while these are available. Note that commercial options to leave Lebanon may become increasingly limited if the security environment further deteriorates.
